2010 Tukkilaiset Log Driving Championships Near Ruka
The second Saturday of July every year sees hoards of men in Lycra trousers clutching wooden poles descend upon my sleepy village near Ruka in Kuusamo, Lapland. It is time for the log driving championships, or tukkilaiset, as it is called in Finnish, a rather tongue in cheek competition that has it’s roots in the logging trade which used to dominate this part of Lapland.
