Flying to Ruka and Kuusamo

There are three airports within a reasonable transfer distance from Ruka and Kuusamo; Kuusamo, Oulu and Rovaniemi.

Get to Ruka via Kuusamo Airport

Kuusamo airport is 17 miles, a 20 minute drive, from Ruka and just 1 mile, a 5 minutes drive, to Kuusamo city center. A bus going to Kuusamo and Ruka comes to meet every scheduled flight as do taxis.

The bus will cost you:

To Ruka – adult 10€, child 5€.
To Kuusamo – adult 7€, child 4€.
To Salla – adult 22€, 11€ child.

A taxi will cost roughly 10€ to Kuusamo and 40€ to Ruka.

Flights to Kuusamo Airport

Finnair flies scheduled flights to Kuusamo airport from the UK as well as other major European airports such as Paris, Vienna and Rome although none of them are direct, you will need to change at Helsinki.

FinnComm (June-Aug) fly to Kuusamo airport from Helsinki, the capital of Finland in the south of the country reasonably cheaply (70-90€ each way) and it is possible to fly to Helsinki with EasyJet, British Airways and SAS from the UK. EasyJet have flights from as little as £27 each way (before tax) if you book well enough in advance.

Crystal Ski and Voigt Travel both fly charter flights for their holiday packages to Ruka in the winter landing at Kuusamo airport. Voigt Travel from Amsterdam and Brussels and Inghams from London Gatwick.

Get to Ruka via Oulu airport.

Oulu airport is just outside the city of Oulu on the west coast of Finland, about 150 miles from Kuusamo, roughly a 3 hour drive to Ruka and Kuusamo.

There is no direct bus from Oulu airport although you can take a bus or taxi from the airport to Oulu central bus station and then a bus to Ruka and Kuusamo from there.

There are several buses a day from Oulu bus station to Ruka, the journey takes approx 4 hours and costs 77€ adult return 43€ child return. Check times and prices on the Matkahuolto website.

Throughout the winter months Ruka also operates a ski bus from Oulu to Ruka leaving Oulu at 7:45 am and costing 35€ for a return trip. The return bus leaves Ruka at 17.00. The information on their website is in Finnish only but if you use Google Translate you will be able to translate it from Finnish to your preferred language.

Another option would be to hire a car at Oulu airport.

Flights to Oulu Airport

Finnair, Blue1 and Air Baltic all fly scheduled flights to Oulu airport from the UK as well as other major European airports such as Paris, Vienna and Rome although none of them are direct. Finnair will change at Helsinki, Blue 1 will change at either Stockholm or Copenhagen and Helsinki (usually 2 changes with this airline) and AirBaltic will change at Riga (Latvia).

You can also fly to Oulu from Helsinki with Blue 1 and Finnair (you will be changing there anyway if you book a flight from elsewhere). There are several companies including EasyJet, SAS and British Airways that fly from the UK to Helsinki. EasyJet have flights from as little as £27 each way (before tax) if you book well enough in advance.

Get to Ruka via Rovaniemi Airport

Rovaniemi airport is just outside the city of Rovaniemi, 125 miles from Ruka and Kuusamo, roughly a 3 hour drive.

There are no direct buses from Rovaniemi, instead you will have to take a bus or taxi to from the airport to the main bus station and then from there to Oulu and then to Ruka. Most journeys take between 6 and 9 hours and cost 90 – 130€ adult return, 53 – 72€ child return.
