Do Natural Mosquito Patches Really Work?
If you’ve done any research on mosquito repellants you will no doubt have come across the claim that citronella and eucalyptus oil can do the job naturally without any of those nasty chemicals. Me too. Which is why I jumped at the chance to review these mosquito patches when the lovely people at Green Baby offered them to me.
We have plenty of mosquitoes in the summer around Ruka and Kuusamo up here in Finnish Lapland so I was excited. A mosquito patch that can do the work of DEET? You bet I’m interested, I’ve got two small children (2 and 4) and would love to be able to send them out without the need for chemicals on a daily basis. My poor son has been bitten to pieces this summer because I don’t want to use the DEET sprays on him at only 2 years old.
How Does The Mosquito Patch Work?
These are small mosquito patches, about 2cm square that are impregnated with citronella and eucalyptus essential oils. You remove them from the packet, give them a squeeze which makes the patch give a satisfying crunch and then the delightful smell of citronella and eucalyptus hit you and them stick them to your clothing.
Did The Mosquito Patch Work?
I was trying to take photos of some flowers in my garden but I had mosquitoes trying to eat my head and every time I held my camera out mosquitoes would land on it and my hands and start biting. I went back inside and attached three of these patches.
The packet says you probably need one or two but I was taking no chances. I put one mosquito patch on the collar of my jacket near my face and one at the end of each sleeve and went back outside.
I’m sad to report, apart fom now having the pleasant aroma of citronella and eucalyptus around me, there was no effect at all, there were still lots of mosquitoes trying to bite me. At one point I had six on one hand but couldn’t control myself enough to take a picture, I was too busy swatting them all off!
I did capture these two photos however, which clearly show mosquitoes within a few centimeters of the mosquito patch, which seems to have no effect on them at all.
The squeeze and stick mosquito patch
A lovely idea and pleasant smell but no effect at all on the mosquitoes. I’m sorry to report that these patches get zero stars, it was exactly the same as going outside with no protection at all.

Hi, I'm Heather and this is my blog and travel guide to Ruka and Kuusamo, Lapland

This product might not work but I’ve tried other brands that worked well for me. I only used them in the garden maybe thats why it seemed to keep them away. In the woods you might need stronger protection. I use them when gardening and it keep all the bad bugs away
I found out some stuff about the patches on this website, they have some articles explaining how they work and stuff like that.. not sure how true it is but they don’t seem to be selling anything so its probably ok. Here’s a link Mosquito Repellent Patches
Keep up the great work on your website, I was reading around for a while and you have made some great informative posts.
Have a great day,

Thanks for the truth about mosquito patches and not just a sales.
Just wanted to say that I have just started using these patches in Spain for myself and my baby, and despite hearing plenty of mozzies all night, neither of us got bitten. Maybe only works on some people/mozzies!
