The Midnight Sun In Ruka and Kuusamo

24hr Daylight in Ruka.

Ruka and Kuusamo in Finnish Lapland are one of the few places in the world to be in the position of having never ending days in summer, where the sun shines all night and 3am is as bright and sunny as 3pm.

Ruka’s Long Summer Days

In stark contrast to our short blue winter days in Ruka, from mid June to mid July we have 24 hours of daylight per day, when the sun hangs like a golden ball, high over the horizon.

These long bright nights have an other worldly feel to them, when everything is silent, everyone asleep, and yet all around you is bright.  At this time of night the lakes are often like sheets of glass and only the occasional call of a bird soaring over head breaks the peace.

It is at times like this when you can feel really connected with nature.

Midsummer is a big celebration in Ruka and Kuusamo

So important to the Finns are these long summer months that summer solstice, or Juhannas, as it is know here, is an official holiday and celebrated by all.
